Born in Stornaway on the Isle of Lewis
in the Hebrides, he graduated with a BSc in Zoology from Glasgow University in
1976. He researched biomechanics at Brunel University and did various jobs
whilst completing an M.Phil thesis in London, before moving back to Scotland in
1990. After working as a computer programmer/analyst in Edinburgh, he became a
full-time writer. He published his first novel, The Star Fraction,
in 1995, which won the Prometheus Award given by the Libertarian Futurist
Society. Since then he has turned out a number of critically-acclaimed works.
The Sky Road won the BSFA Award in 1999 for best
novel, and his latest, Learning the World, is nominated for
the BSFA and Arthur C. Clarke Awards this year. Ken lives with his wife and
children in West Lothian.
Ken has also been nominated for a 2006
Hugo Award for Learning the World
